The Best Advice I’ve Ever Received…

***As originally published in COCO Magazine***

Recently, my husband and I got to talking about the best advice we’ve ever received.   When he asked me what I’d classify as the best advice I’ve ever received, I said in true form, “I can’t just pick one!”

Yes, I’m ‘that girl’ that goes to a restaurant, picks a fish, steak and chicken entrée and asks the server which is the best. I’m ‘that girl’ that will get the same purse in two different colours because I can’t choose which colour I prefer.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely unable to make decisions but when it comes to things I truly love, like food, fashion and advice, I have a difficult time.

So I got to thinking, ‘why is it that I just can’t pick one?’  Here’s what I came up with, I CAN make a decision, but the advice varies for different aspects and/or facets of my life.  Here are a few of the best advice I’ve ever received:

ON LIFE

“If you wait for the perfect moment, it will never come.” (My Dad)

Just think about it for a second, if you keep waiting for the perfect opportunity you could find yourself waiting a long time.  So, go out there and create your own perfect, go out there and start making things happen.

ON LOVE

“A slow cook on a warm fire is better than a fast cook on a hot fire.” (My Aunt)

When it comes to love and other things we live in a ‘microwave’ society.  Things must be ready and ready now.  The truth is when it comes to love, you should take it slow, allow it to warm up and develop over time.  If love does start off too hot and heavy, chances are that it will cool down real fast or just not endure the test of time.

ON WORK

“It’s attitude not aptitude that determines altitude.” (My Dad)

A good, pleasant attitude will get you much further than a bad one, even if you know everything there is to know. Let’s face it; people appreciate nice people over ‘know-it-alls’.  Remember that.

ON KIDS

“There’s no manual, just trust your gut.” (My Mom)

This is a piece of advice that can really be used for anything.  But my mom has said it about raising kids. My mom started a family when she was 18 years, she had no idea what she was doing.  But fast forward 39 years, she mothered (and allow me to be a bit biased here) four beautiful, talented and successful women, all by trusting her gut…and (she’ll be quite upset if I didn’t say this) a lot of prayer.  She knew when we were up to no good and when she needed to get in our corner.  She is the epitome of a woman who trusts her gut!

ON FRIENDS

“Choose them wisely” (Me)

Family you’re born into, friends you choose, so why not be selective?  Choose the cream of the crop!  This really is a no brainer.

ON FASHION

“A girl can never have too many pairs of shoes” (My Mom)

My mom always jokes that her prayer is, “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that I might wear heels all the days of my life”. Love her!  But seriously, a girl can never have too many shoes.  Shoes can take an outfit from uptown to downtown, from the park to the The Plaza, from ‘meh’ to ‘woot woot’.  You really can never have too many.  Recently I heard this quote, “A pair of shoes can change a girl’s life, just ask Cinderella.”

So there you have it, these are some of the best pieces of advice that I’ve received.

What’s the one advice that I give? “When you’re happy with yourself, you’ll judge others less” oh, that and “Smile, life’s not that serious.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
